Lucky Duck by Greg Pizzoli

Hello, Picture Book Builders people.

We are ALL such lucky ducks that Greg Pizzoli wrote and illustrated another delightful picture book. This latest book is Lucky Duck.

I have been a fan of Greg’s for a long time. I did the math. That long time equals eleven years. How did I solve this equation? Easy! Greg’s first book, The Watermelon Seed, debuted in 2013. This book has remained one of my very favorite picture books ever since. (If you have not read this book, stop what you are doing right now–reading this post–and go find it. You won’t be sorry.)

Okay. Back to Lucky Duck. Lucky Duck stars a duck named Susan.

Sometimes, life isn’t so lucky for Susan. Her new rollerskates are too big. She’s lost her favorite marble. And she’s run out of pickles. Poor Susan!

But, in between all of these bits of bad luck, a wolf shows up with a seemingly bit of good luck.

Lucky for YOU, I have a list of five reasons why this book brought me some joy.

  1. It’s a Greg Pizzoli book.
  2. A duck named SUSAN? C’mon. That’s solid gold stuff right there.
  3. It has drama! Readers understand the stakes of the situation the moment the wolf shows up–even though poor Susan does not.
  4. It’s FUNNY and you know I like FUNNY. I mean the book uses the word ‘pickle’. You simply can’t go wrong with a funny-sounding word like ‘pickle’ in a funny picture book.
  5. All of Susan’s bad luck throughout the day pays off in the end.

At this point, you’re probably thinking, “Tammi! I want more about Greg Pizzoli and his books! What should I do???!!!”

Well, it’s your lucky day. I have the answer. Click here for more!
