As the weather chills, let’s take a look at a great picture book for winter: COME CATCH A DREAM by Brittany J. Thurman and Islenia Mil.

In this story, a boy walks home every day with his mother, always passing the ice skating rink. Most of the year the rink is closed. But no matter how hot the day is or empty the rink, every time they pass the boy imagines ice skating. The boy recalls how last year he fell, but he never gives up his dream of returning to the skating rink and spinning on the ice.

His Momma assures the boy that “nothing is impossible,” and he remembers these “magic words” as he attempts to ice skate the following season, falling again before executing the elusive spin.

I love this book about the magic of skating—and the magic of words— for winter, but it is also a great reminder in any season about the importance of persistence, practice, and believing in oneself.
The short lines, movement descriptions, and perceptive first person voice bring us into the young ice skater’s experiences and the energetic digital illustrations capture the ups and downs of this heartwarming tale.
It’s great for showing all the things you can try and not give up on. Great illustrations!
