The SWEATER, A Story of Community

The Sweater, A Story of Community, written by Larissa Theule and gloriously illustrated by Teagan White, launches into our world with impeccable timing.

Heading out for her hike, Holly notices a small bird and,

“It was plain to see he’d been through some things.”

The little bird desperately needs to find shelter and Holly watches him hop into a hollow tree. She pauses to make certain that he is settled and then heads out to meet with her neighbors.

Each darling community critter contributes a tiny bit, whatever they can.

Holly goes home and uses each donated supply to knit the tiny bird a sweater.

She delivers her gift as the winter storm brews. When Holly notices the holes in the little bird’s tree, the neighbors come by to patch things up and show the bird how to shore up his new home.

The long winter keeps each member snuggled in their houses alone. But when the brutal wind finally forgets to howl, the neighbors are welcomed outside by the little bird’s glorious song of thanks.

With all the division occurring in our world today, this beautifully illustrated story provides the perfect way to explain to our little ones the importance of caring for each other and the strength of community. Teagan White’s cozy palette, along with their sweet, soft-eyed animals, exudes warmth and love. And Larissa Theule’s poetic word choices felt like tiny hugs along the path.

The Sweater is a lovely, heartfelt book that delivers a big lesson with a gentle touch along with a dose of thoughtful compassion— Just like a caring neighbor would do. ❤️
