Extra! Extra! Read all about it!
I’m calling today Talk It Up Tuesday.
Here’s a quick shout out to ten picture book blasts from the not-so-recent past.
Book 1:
Zombie in Love by Kelly DiPucchio, illustrated by Scott Campbell
This book features a zombie’s quest to find the perfect ghoul.
It’s stinking great.
Do yourself a favor and GET THIS BOOK.
Book 2:
Another Brother written and illustrated by Matthew Cordell
Davy is a much doted upon only child. Then he gets a brother. And another. And another…. The next thing Davy knows he has twelve brothers, and they are intent on copying his every move.
I am crazy about the heart and silliness and pure freshness of this book.

Book 3:
Wink: The Ninja Who Wanted to Be Noticed written and illustrated by J. C. Phillipps
This book has ninjas!
Even better, it has Master Zutsu. Master Zutsu has wisdom. He has high expecations. And he has the world’s best lines.
Examples:
“The loudest cricket is the first to be caught.”
“The blossom that flaunts its color is soon plucked!”
“Free-flowing water will always find its way.”

Book 4:
Chicken Butt! by Erica Perl, illustrated by Henry Cole
This book BEGS to be read aloud. It’s fun. It’s interactive. It’s the one book my son is really bummed I didn’t write.
Do yourself a favor and GET THIS BOOK.
Book 5:
Vote for Me! written and illustrated by Ben Clanton
This book has humor! It has energy! It has flair! I vote for Ben Clanton!

Book 6:
I’m Not by Paula Smallcomb, illustrated by Robert Weinstock
Oh, how I love a good friendship book. Especially a funny one. Especially a funny one that also celebrates the discovery of what one is good at in this world.

Book 7:
It’s a Tiger! by David LaRochelle, illustrated by Jeremy Tankard
I have always been a huge fan of David LaRochelle AND a huge fan of Jeremy Tankard. But the two of them together?! Well, let me pause a moment to swoon.
*swoons*
This book makes an excellent read aloud. It also comes with humor. And…A TIGER!

Book 8:
Jump! written and illustrated by Scott M. Fischer
It’s wild. It’s fun. It BEGS for audience participation.

Book 9:

This book has it all: heart, humor, drama, fabulous art, and the positively irresistible Itsy Mitsy.

Book 10:
Ugly Fish by Kara LaReau, illustrated by Scott Magoon
This is one of my ALL TIME FAVORITE picture books. I fell for its understated humor and its surprise ending hook, line, and sinker.

Thanks, Tammi and Pat, for the list of books! I’ll definitely search for these!
What are YOUR favorites?
These look great! Thanks for a fun list, Tammi!
Thanks Tammi and Pat for promising new reads. I did a review on Chicken Butt! and agree it’s hilarious.
My current favorite is Annie’s Plaid Shirt, by Stacy B. Davids. It is so ‘favorite’ I carried it around the house with me, and back and forth to work, for the first 3 weeks I owned it! Annie loves her plaid shirt and wears it everywhere. When her mother says she must wear a dress to a family wedding, she doesn’t want to. They buy a dress, but Annie finds ‘her’ way to wear her plaid shirt to the wedding. (See book review at San Francisco Book Review, http://www.sanfranciscobookreview.com/2016/01/annies-plaid-shirt/) Every once in a while you find a book that was written just for you–this one’s mine.
I just requested half of these from the library. THANK you.
My two absolute favorites are Chicks Run Wild by Sudipta Bardhan-Quallen and Guess Again? By Mac Barnett and Adam Rex. Both delightful and brilliant – each in their own ways!
Yay! Happy reading. 🙂
An excellent list. I’ve only read three of them, so I’d better get to work. Thanks, Tammi!
