Question: Why Did the Chicken Cross the Road?

Answer: She wanted a good BAWK!

If you know me, you know I love chicken books. Chickens have starred in many of mine.

Evidence:

I also own a lot of chicken-y books written by other people. Chicken Big by Keith Graves, however, is one of my all-time favorites. I would totally cross a busy road for this book!

Allow me to share Five of the MANY Reasons Why I think Chicken Big is Egg-Cellent:

1.) Let’s begin with the cover. Keith easily shows us that this is no ordinary chicken. She is one big chicken. I mean she doesn’t even fully fit into the scene! Not only that, but the title is a play on the familiar. We have all heard about Chicken Little, so we can readily connect to and appreciate this title. It makes us smile and, well, feel kind of smart. Oh! And one more thing–who doesn’t want to open up this book to find out what this big chicken fully looks like?!

2.) This book is funny! Even the title page is worth clucking about, no?

3.) Any great use of parentheses in a picture book gets my tail feathers shook!

4.) There’s DRAMA. Uh-oh. A sneaky red fox has made his way into this book. You’ve been warned!

5.) And, oh my chicken and stars! Keith Graves gives us a total gift with this back cover.

Okay, Picture Book Builders People. I suggest you fly the coop and get your hands on this delightful bawk…err…I mean BOOK!
