Hello, Picture Book Builders people.
I’m here with a warning…THE BEAR IS OUT THERE.

This picture book, written and illustrated by Jess Hannigan, is a delight.
I’m not the only one who thinks so. These are a couple of the reviews:
‘Kids will be drawn in by the friendly, colorful imagery and hooked by the cleverly played rising tension and the sly progression of the unreliable narrator and her tale. Hannigan proves again to be a delightful new voice in the picture-book space with this must of a storytime selection.’ — Booklist (starred review)
‘A beloved classic fairy tale with a new twist, this is frightfully fun and novel.’ — School Library Journal (starred review)
Nice, huh?
These are 5 of the many reasons why you need to brave any possible bear situations and track down this book:
- It’s written in second person, and I immediately felt like the narrator invited me right into the story.
- It has DRAMA and SUSPENSE which are two much appreciated ingredients in a picture book.
- Th art and text are just right scary for the young crowd (and this 52yo).
- The voice of the girl is gold. GOLD, I say! I kind of want to track her down and befriend her.
- There is a twist that I did not see coming. Bravo to that!
Now I need to wrap up this post.

Loved Spider in the Well too!
I’m hooked!
This is the shortest and most compelling review I’ve ever read! It’s GOLD, I say! I MUST have it!
Such a teaser – it worked! Looks like a great read-aloud.
Can’t wait to read it. What fun!
Such wonderful reviews! Congratulations, Jess!
