We recently had a bat in our house. I was home alone and discovered something with fur on my bathroom vanity. I could tell you that I calmly set down my hair dryer, put on gloves, and removed the bat to the great outdoors. But…
truth be told I threw my hairdryer across the room, ran out and shut the door. I even stuffed towels around the doorframe. No, I was not brave. But my son was when he came home.
So maybe that’s part of why I liked Superbat, by Matt Carr so much? Or at least in part? Much of what I like about this book is how much I think kids will love it!
The story is about Pat, the Bat who really wants to be a superhero. So, he makes himself a costume and sets out to perform his super powers; super hearing, the ability to fly, echolocation. Of course when he tells his friends that these are his Superbat skills they laugh and inform him that they can all do those things, too.
Poor Pat feels sad and un-super. But when he hears someone in distress, he rushes to help them. His caring and bravery turn out to make him a true superhero after all. So not only is it a book about bats, but it’s about being proud and happy about who you are. We are all superheroes!
The illustrations are hilarious. You can tell that Matt Carr is a very talented graphic designer. Each page is visually brilliant and inviting. Very funny little asides and voice bubbles will have adults and kids laughing out loud. I am always impressed when an illustrator’s style is so bold (and appropriately comic book-like) and graphic, and yet they are able to convey so much emotion and personality in their characters.
At the back are some “batty facts” so that readers can learn even more about these adorable critters, who are fine as long as they are not in my house!

Bats are fascinating–from a distance. But a book about a Superbat? That sounds worth a place on my to-read list.
What a fun way to give facts about bats in story form. Thanks.
