The Amazing Augustus by Tammi Sauer

Hello, Picture Book Builders people.

Are you ready to be amazed?

Well, my lead character in The Amazing Augustus, illustrated by Pauline Gregory, is all set to prove just how amazing he is. But Augustus gets so busy boasting and celebrating himself that he winds up in the belly of a lion. Can Augustus do something, well, amazing to get himself out of this predicament?

Probably! Because The Amazing Augustus and Friends is a book that will hit the shelves in 2027.

My favorite part about writing this book and the sequel was establishing the voice of this little squirrel with a big attitude.

These are the opening lines:

Having such a distinct, pompous voice makes this book an extra fun one to read aloud.

Another thing that I enjoyed about writing The Amazing Augustus is that it’s a book in which the little readers and listeners discover early on that they know Augustus isn’t exactly as amazing as he thinks he is. Kids like being in the know.

Plus, this book has humor. I have always loved funny picture books, and, though he is not trying to be funny, Augustus is a character that gives kids the giggles. Touching a kid’s heart AND a kid’s funny bone are always two of my top writing goals.

By using a strong voice, making kids feel in the know, and incorporating humor, I did my best to create an AMAZING book for kids.
